Celebrating 5 Years:

Rooted in Resilience

Food ED’s unofficial motto the last five years has been, “We’re building the bridge as we walk on it.” And that bridge hasn’t faltered. From one inquiry about a school garden to managing 14 gardens across five cities, we’ve grown in more ways than one.

These gardens are spaces to learn about plants, soil, bugs, and healthy living—but even more, they’re places of community, resilience, and hope. We’re still building, still rooting, still growing—and the real growth is in communities finding hope in a world full of hopeless headlines.

When we plant seeds, sift compost, and cook alongside our neighbors, we break down barriers and build longer tables. We establish roots that help us endure the challenges the world throws at us and create a foundation to grow even further. Here’s to the next 5, 10, 20 years of rooting in resilience and growing a brighter future—thank you for your ongoing support and for rooting for us along the way!

The Golden Gnomies is our annual celebration honoring the people who make Food ED possible. Join us on February 20th, 2026 as we celebrate our 5th anniversary by sharing stories and success with a cozy meal!

We’re proud of how far we’ve come and excited for what’s ahead. Donate to support the next five years of community-rooted food education.

Our Milestones

Before we look forward, we’re taking a moment to honor where we started. From our first seeds in 2020 to 14 gardens across five cities today, our milestones show the growth, community, and resilient roots that keep us moving forward.

Our Stories

And of course, countless stories that show how our work takes root in everyday moments across our communities.

“IM HAPPPYYY!!!”

After just two months at Duarte Community Garden, a new plot holder shared how welcomed and fulfilled she feels. She raised her hands to the sky and exclaimed how happy the garden has made her feel.

Confidence in the Garden

During her time as a plot holder, Nicole grew more confident as a gardener, taking home an abundance of produce and watching her toddler become more open to eating new vegetables through growing food together.

Showing Up to Learn

A seventh grader who often struggles with attendance arrived early, and fully engaged, on the day of an owl pellet dissection. His teacher later shared that he came on time because he was excited for the lab.

Curiosity

At Compostpalooza, Cora carefully examined each bug again and again. A family member later shared that ever since seeing hissing cockroaches at the event last year, Cora has been drawing them everywhere.

Rainbow Cauliflower

After trying rainbow cauliflower in class, a second grader went home raving about it—and begged his family to buy some. Before this lesson, his teacher didn’t even know he liked cauliflower.

2nd Grade • Monroe Elementary

I’m going to compost on my own.

While filling the compost tumbler, a second grader shared how much he loved composting and said he planned to start finding green waste at home so he could compost on his own time.

If you have a moment that reflects learning, connection, or resilience through Food ED, no matter how big or small, we’d be honored to hear it!
